Situation

A typical change request (CR).

As the Optum Clinical Manager app is rolled out, gaps are identified. Change Requests are created with business and technical requirements.

Timebox

Immediately in the current two week sprint.

Problem

Nurses completing reviews for members in DRG facilities with EMR access have a gap in identifying and obtaining the discharge date for case closure.

Task

Interview stakeholders, define the problem to solve, and recommend solutions.

Result

Stakeholders chose to not do user research. The decision was made to implement the solution with the least amount of development time. The UX Team recommended against this due to the resulting technical and design debt.

The immediate need was resolved with a sub-optimal user experience. The outcome was registered as an architectural defect and listed in the backlog.

Learning

While we always strive for great user experiences, sometimes we have to solve a critical need and anticipate a longer term solution.
